(#112) Rosewater & Cardamom: The Aphrodisiac

When two aphrodisiacs join forces in an ice cream, the result is.....(don't make me say it). Rosewater & Cardamom Ice Cream - it's one fine flavor!

P.S. Cardamom is the love of my life!

(#106) Lavender Cardamom: Let's Get Lost

I just planted my first lavender plant! It's the start of a little lavender garden that I'll be growing on my back patio. I'm about to start composting, too! It'll mostly be Scoopsies scraps (scrapsies!) that will help the lavender grow. It's a beautiful cycle!

I couldn't wait, though. I stopped in to Cambridge Naturals and grabbed a few ounces for my most recent flavor, Lavender Cardamom. Katelyn (of Scoop Sights) came over and made her own lavender delight--Vegan Lavender Lemon Ice Cream. Both scrumptious.

Light and delicate, this flavor is my companion for the Summer.

(#93) CARDAMOM LEMON: The One and Only Cardamom

A few weeks ago, I ate at my first Afghani restaurant. I ordered Kofta Challow and more importantly--cardamom ice cream.  I have a real soft spot for cardamom, mostly because of the kick it gave (flavor #1!) Turkish Coffee I've used it quite a bit throughout the project, actually, but never really gave it the attention it deserved.

I loved taking a bite and tasting the cardamom without the distraction of a coffee flavor or other (equally lovable) spices.

A vegan version of this flavor was suggested by my friend Jan Marie. I didn't choose the vegan one for my blog, but it does work well with coconut substitutes!

(#87) TURMERIC: Ice Cream for the Enlightened

Friends from my many different life "chapters" have been supporting Scoopsies--from the first two friends I ever made to my current co-workers to the guy who bagged my groceries at Trader Joe's last week. One of the best parts of this project is how it has reconnected me with old friends.

My friend Bethania, who I don't believe I've seen since High School (almost 10 years ago--nuts!), suggested I make a turmeric flavor. She sent me her recipe for a turmeric drink with  ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, and honey in warm milk, which has replaced my nightly cup of lemongrass tea.  I drink it with almond milk and every sip is so soothing!
I just had to make it into a flavor!

(#26) PISTACHIO & CARDAMOM KULFI: Indian Ice Cream!

Ice cream is on our minds 24/7.  Literally.  So when we're in social situations, it doesn't take long before ice cream becomes the main topic of discussion.  A few weeks ago I went to a friend's birthday picnic and, after telling them the concept behind "100 Scoopsies," I asked my usual "do you have any suggestions?"  You know when you go your whole life without hearing a word or phrase or some kind of reference, and suddenly it gets brought up three times in a week?  Well, that's kind of what happened with kulfi.  Separately four different people suggested it!  The next day, I was having coffee with some friends and THERE IT WAS AGAIN! "Have you tried kulfi?"  It was a sign.  It had to be made as one of our 100 flavors and we had to make it now!

Kulfi is made with condensed milk.  You can buy it pre-condensed or condense it yourself by stirring the mixture frequently over medium-low heat for 45 minutes.  It leaves you with the creamiest dessert!  Other popular kulfi flavors are rose, saffron, and mango.
It is typically eaten as a popsicle (I may or may not have already purchased kulfi popsicle moulds from India).

Oh, and you can count on this flavor being at our upcoming June 30th ice cream social!

Scoopsies' Pistachio & Cardamom Kulfi
(yields about 1.5 pints)
5 cups of milk (condensed)
1/4 cup sugar
9 cardamom seeds (or more)
1/2 cups ground pistachios
1/2 cup chopped pistachios

(#1) TURKISH COFFEE: Cardamom Kick

After months of preparation for this project, it's FINALLY here!  In one year from now, we will have made 100 ice cream flavors.  Just thinking of the recipes we will bring to life, and the delicious variety of flavors we will get to taste is such an overwhelming yet delightful idea. With the diving of our spoons into the first of our many flavors, we began the adventure that is 100 Scoopsies.

Because this was our first flavor, we had to pick something bold--something rich, that you don't often see as a selection in the ice cream shop.  It had to be something special and coming up with it ourselves just didn't seem right.  So we took to our followers and got some really solid suggestions. With the most votes,Turkish Coffee it was.

TURKISH COFFEE ICE CREAM
(yields 1 quart)
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 cups whole milk
3/4 cups sugar
1 cup whole coffee beans
12 cardamom pods
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon espresso powder

Turkish Coffee is quite a simple flavor, but the subtle kick of the cardamom makes all the difference. This recipe is so rich and creamy--it was hard to put the spoon down!
